Higuaín and Gago: The Club's latest signings attend their first training session

Real Madrid's return from the holiday's proved to be the first training session for their latest signings, Higuaín and Gago. Both players arrived together at Valdebebas with big smiles on their faces half an hour before the start of this afternoon's training session. Minutes later they stepped onto the pitch with their new teammates in order to put a start to their new professional life.

Gago and Higuaín's dream started coming true today at 4 pm when they both experienced their first few minutes as players on "the best Club in the world". Like all youngsters, they looked bold and sure of their quality.

They stepped onto the field together and found a new "ally" in Robinho. They joined him during Capello's opening speech and while jogging around the pitch. Gago, Higuaín and Robinho formed a young and explosive threesome that may prove to be a decisive fixture on the team in the not too distant future. Gago then joined Emerson, Beckham and Reyes during the jogging series that ensued, while Higuaín ran with Raúl, Ronaldo, Robinho and Guti.

Higuaín scores

Both new players' quality soon shined in the 30 minute long practice match at the end of the training session. Gago clearly showed he is a very solid playmaker, very much like his idol Fernando Redondo was. He distributed his team's game down both sides of the pitch, controlling the ball extremely well the few times he came into contact with it. On the other hand, Higuaín showcased his natural scoring instinct, constantly looking to receive the ball from many different positions. When he finally did, he proved to be merciless by scoring a beautiful goal after going past the entire defence and the goalkeeper single-handed.

It seems clear that both players will soon be able to delight Real Madrid fans. Today's work seems to predict their success and the smiles on their faces when leaving Valdebebas proved they were satisfied with their first day at work with Real Madrid.

Gonzalo Higuaín: "I still can't believe I've signed for Real Madrid"

He may be young, but he is overly prepared. Despite being 19 years old, Gonzalo Higuaín doesn't shrink at the thought of having to fight for a spot on Real Madrid's attacking front with important players such as Van Nistelrooy and Ronaldo. The Argentinian is sure of being able to convince Fabio Capello of his quality to earn a prominent spot on the team.

You can at last feel like a Real Madrid player.
Yes, but I still can't believe I've signed for the best Club in the world.

How was your first meeting with your new teammates?
We hardly met. I hardly had time to swap shirts with anybody, but I did manage to keep a shirt with my name on it.

What did Capello say to you?
Our talk wasn't long. He basically told me he will count on me as long as I work very hard. I'm going to give it my all so that I am part of his schemes and plans.

There's a lot of competition for the spot...
I know, but I'm not too worried. I don't feel a lesser player and I will fight hard with anybody for the spot. I wouldn't have joined this team if I didn't feel ready to do so.

Having Gago on the squad will no doubt help you along the way...
Of course. It's always good to have a fellow Argentinian on the team. He is also a great player. I've never met him, but every person I know who knows him speaks very highly of Gago.

Higuaín to Realmadrid.com: "I'll give back the confidence that they have in me"

Upon arriving in Madrid, Gonzalo Hiugaín sat down with Realmadrid.com and Realmadrid TV and talked about his objectives in European football. The former River Plate forward said he was proud to have joined "the most powerful Club in the world" and he expressed his desire to be a Madridista for years to come and to win many titles.

Gonzalo Higuaín, welcome to Madrid and Real Madrid. How have you felt in the few days you have been here?
I'm getting to know the city I'll be living in for the next six and a half years little by little. I am very happy to be here. I'll return to Argentina for the holidays, but I'll be back on December 30th to train with the team.

What do you think playing for Real Madrid will be like? I'm not talking about players, because Argentina has important players as well, but perhaps the ones here are more internationally recognised.
It's going to be incredible playing on this great squad. I am convinced I will learn a lot from them. What I have to do is work hard and earn my spot.

You already know Fabio Capello is very demanding, but I'm sure it won't be a problem for you.
No, not at all. I am confident in myself and my football. My new teammates are great players, but that's expected on a team like Real Madrid. I still have a lot to learn, but my teammates are great players and the coaching staff highly qualified. What's important is that I'm happy to be a part of this Club and that they have placed their trust in me.

You are 19 and a starter for River, one of Argentina's top Clubs, and all of a sudden Real Madrid calls you. What went through your head?
A lot. I am young and it's hard to reach the top level, but I will gain a lot of experience here. As I said earlier, it's time to be happy. I have achieved what I wanted, which was to play inn Europe. I didn't expect it to happen so soon, but I am here and I have to take advantage of this great opportunity.
You don't feel any pressure?
No. I've been playing for a Club very similar to Real Madrid. The same kind of pressure exists, the fans are similar, and both teams have gone several years without winning a title. Now I want to help Real Madrid win many lots of League titles.
Twenty-six Argentineans have played for Real Madrid and all have done very well here. Does that give you an idea of what is expected of you?
Yes. It's true that those Argentineans who have played here have done well for the most part. But I don't feel any pressure. I have to work hard, and hopefully I will be playing here for a long time. I am very comfortable here, with the most powerful Club in the world and surrounded by great people.

What did you learn in Argentina's First Division?
It was a whirlwind. I played in the Clasico very early on and it was hard for me to take it all in. But, I have settled and my feet are firmly in place. I am everyone else's equal and I need to fight for a spot just as hard.

Would you say your big leap came after the Boca Juniors match?
Perhaps. I knew the whole world was watching, but I play every match the same way. I don't want to disappoint anyone and I hope to give back the confidence that has been placed in me.

Would you define yourself as a goal scorer or the player who gets the last pass in?
I am comfortable where I play. I hope to improve and triumph here, in the League of Stars.

Are you more of an attacking midfielder or forward?
I feel good playing anywhere up front. I played more as an attacking midfielder for River, but you can learn to play anywhere.

Did you become a forward to upset your dad, a former defender?
I became a forward because I have always liked scoring.

What advice has your father given you?
To let my personality shine through and to be glory-hungry. To always strive to be better and not settle for anything less.

Do you know what national team you will play for?
I don't. All my thoughts are on Real Madrid.

What title would you rather win?
I'm not sure. I think there's something special about the European Cup. I hope to win a title this season.

Have you given yourself a time limit to adapt?
I will try to adapt as fast as I can. That's why I have my family with me. My teammates have been incredible. I think I will adapt to Madrid and Spanish football pretty quickly.

You have a language, food, and people in common.
There shouldn't be any problems adapting.

What would you tell the fans?
That I'll give back the confidence that they have in me.

First press conference:Gago: "It's an honour to play on this squad"

Fernando Gago's hectic morning culminated with his first press conference as a Real Madrid player. The Argentinian attended to the media who gathered in the press room of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Gago expressed his desire to adapt quickly to a football very different than what he is used to.

You've see matches an you know that there is a lot of pressure for a player of your position in Spain. Does that worry you?
It doesn't worry me. I'm coming from a very different type of football and I'll try to adapt as fast as possible. I'll have to get used to the rhythm of play by training, but I'm not worried.

Maradona has said that you have what it takes to succeed at Real Madrid. What do you think about that?
I have always had a good relationship with Diego, and it's very flattering. It's important because he is someone who achieved everything in football and he has supported me at all times. But I still have to work hard and continue making progress.

What will you remember from a moment like this one?
Family support is always important at times like there, because they are who I share everything with.

After seeing the Recreativo match, did you ever think you could have done more?
I was unable to watch it. I've come to give my very best every day and I don't think it will take long to adjust to European football.
You had some great offers but you finally chose Real Madrid. Why were you so adamant about playing for Madrid?
Redondo has always been my idol, even though we are very different. I always dreamed of wearing this shirt some day and now my dream is reality.
Do you think you might play for Castilla?
I'm come to work hard with the First Team. The coach will decide who plays and who doesn't. I still haven't had the chance to speak to him, but I hope to earn his trust as soon as possible.

Were you ever worried that this transfer wouldn't go through?
I wanted as little do to with it as possible and all I was focusing on was the Argentinian tournament. But then the possibility of joining Real Madrid came up and I didn't want to miss out.

How do you like the Stadium?
It's amazing. I had seen it on television, but I had never been here. I was very impressed.
What's your opinion on Real Madrid's play?
I haven't seen a lot, but I have tried to. From what I have seen, I think there is a squad good enough to lead Real Madrid to many titles.

Capello plays with two centre midfielders. Do you prefer playing alone or alongside someone?
I have always played alone but I wouldn't have any problems sharing the midfield. I have only done it with Argentina due to the style of play.

Is it true you had the chance to play for FC Barcelona?
I had offers, but I wanted to play for Real Madrid, and fortunately I will be.

Presentation of Fernando Gago: "I'm thrilled to be joining the Club of my dreams"

Presentation number two in just as many days, and the second player of Argentinian nationality. Shortly after 1 pm CET, Ramón Calderón and Alfredo Di Stéfano officially presented Fernando Gago inside the Presidential Balcony of the Santiago Bernabeú Stadium. “We have signed one of the world's best midfielders,” declared the President.

After signing his contract in the Board Room of the Santiago Bernabéu, Fernando Gago posed with his new shirt for the first time. Moments earlier, Ramón Calderón, accompanied by Alfredo Di Stéfano, spoke about the new Madridista player. “It wasn't easy. Even the President of Boca said these negotiations were the hardest ever, just as River's President had stated days ago. It shows this Board of Directors' desire to satisfy the Club's needs and those of its supporters, and that it can also fulfill the sacred duty of correctly administering the wealth that the Members have placed in its hands.”

After acknowledging the “generosity” of the player to renounce “a hefty sum of money in order to dress in white,”, the President affirmed that “with the arrival of Fernando, Marcelo and Higuaín, we've completed a trio of white Aces who will allow the Club to bring in new generations of footballers a few at a time.”

“At his age, and with his track record, we can safely say that Real Madrid have signed one of the best midfielders in the world.” Calderón then highlighted Gago's career, his many successes in spite of his young age, and his talents.

“What stand out are his intelligence, his abitlity to read the game, his speed, and his ability to distribute the ball. He has been a key piece of every team he has played on. He has been praied by several football lovers, including fellow countrymen Maradona, Fernando Redondo, Jorge Valdano, and even our great President of Honour, Don Alfredo Di Stéfano, who all agree he is an extremely talented footballer. We know, and are sure, that you will triumph here. We thank you for choosing us and hope that you and your family are very happy here.”

“The Club of my dreams”
Then came the moment to pose with his new shirt alongside Ramón Calderón and Alfredo Di Stéfano, and then alone. Gago closed out his presentation by thanking “all the effort by the President, Mijatovic and Baldini to make this possible. I'm thrilled to be joining the Club of my dreams. I want to take Real Madrid as far as possible.”

Higuaín is now "one of us": Pipita presented as the newest Real Madrid player

It's official. Gonzalo Higuaín was presented this afternoon as a Real Madrid player until 2013. The act took place in an adjoining conference room to the Presidential Balcony of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and was presided by Ramón Calderón and President of Honour Alfredo Di Stéfano.

Shortly after 5 pm CET, in an adjoining conference room to the Presidential Balcony, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Ramón Calderón, and Gonzalo Higuaín, appeared before the press for the Argentianian footballer's official as a new Real Madrid player. After landing in Madrid early on Wednesday, having the required checkup, and attending last night's League match against Recreativo Huelva, all that was left was to finalise the process. The contract signing took place minutes prior the clock striking 5 pm, which was followed by Higuaín's official presentation.

RAMÓN CALDERÓN: "MANY WANTED HIM"

The brief presentation began with a short speech by President Ramón calderón, who thanked Higuaín for finally choosing Real Madrid after receiving so many different offers from other teams. "Real Madrid, as we promised, is working on a project of the future. The Club has just incorporated the newest member to its family, one of the most valued players in international football. Eleven days ago, on 10 December, he turned 19. He was born in Brest, France, but has lived in Argentina his whole life. His father and brother passed on their passion for the sport, which is why he is now recognised around the world. Many clubs wanted him, but he decided to come here, where we received him with open arms."

"He made his First Division debut three seasons ago and played three matches. He played 14 matches the following season and scored five goals. This season, he played 18 games with a total of eight goals. In the 'Clasico' against Boca, he scored a brace that no one will ever forget. He was named ‘Sports Revelation of the Year’ by an Argentine newspaper thanks to his sporting and human values because, despite his success, he remains humble. Gonzalo, thank you for being here. I wish you all the luck in the world on this new adventure."

HIGUAÍN: "ON TO SUCCESS"
The next to take the floor was Gonzalo Higuaín. In spite of his young age and the growing mass of journalists waiting for him to speak, Pipita wasn't rattled by his nerves. He even addressed the President by his first name. "First, I would like to thank Ramón and everyone else who made this transfer possible," he said.

Gonzalo kept his words short. He promised work and more work, which tends to be the case in these types of situations. "I want to earn everyone's respect by working hard. Nothing else. I'll do what I know best. Thank you very much. On to success!"

SHIRT... WITH NO NUMBER

The act came to a close with what has become standard presentation protocol over the last several years. President of Honour, Alfredo Di Stéfano presented Higuaín with his shirt; immaculate white with his name included, but no number. Ramón Calderón joined in for the photo, which marked the end of the presentation. The newest Madridista then headed to the dressing room to don his new kit before making his way to the Bernabéu pitch where hundreds of fans waited.

Pedja Mijatovic:"We need the fans' support and to think about what we did well"

Real Madrid's Sporting Director, Pedja Mijatovic, put his foot down after seeing his team suffer their worst home loss of the season. "We can't play like that," said the former Madridista player, who also assured that the Whites would "give a lot more to be happy about in 2007."

“I can't believe it. After all the suffering and incredible effort against Espanyol we couldn't pull it out again. Recreativo played and touched the ball wel. We didn't exist on the pitch. It's a very unpleasant loss. It's hard to come up with positive aspects. We did everything badly, like too many passes, which I can't understand. We didn't exist out there. We didn't even have one opportunity.”

“I hope it's the last defeat at home. We're going to give a lot more to be happy about next year. We had a lot of trouble on our side of the pitch and that's what we want to improve. We need the fans' support and to think about what we did well, if there is anything. Then we have to do everything possible to achieve our goals.”

“We have to analyse a lot of things. This match should serve as an example of how not to play. The players need to take this time off to rest with their families, and starting December 30th, do everything in their power to make sure these things don't happen.”

“I would have liked to give all the Madridistas three points for Christmas, but I'll take this opportunity to send my best wishes to our members, fans, and supporters. Happy holidays and next year will be much better for Madridismo.”

Fabio Capello:"We have to look ahead"

Following Wednesday's match between Real Madrid and Recreativo Huelva at the Santiago Bernabéu, Fabio Capello appeared before the press to analyse the match.

How would you assess the match?
There are no answer for the way we player. Yesterday I told my players that a game prior to vacation is always dangerous. And that's what happened. This team didn't at all resemble the team that defeated Espanyol on Sunday. They played well and deserved to win. We have to look ahead.

Would you call this an accident?
I think were were invisible out there. There's no way this can be a team. Something happened, but we have to forget about losing and think about our next match. I don't know what happened. Toni Grande and I were talking on the bench and didn't know what to do. We had to change the entire eleven. It wasn't possible.

Did it resemble the same attitude the team had against Getafe?
Much worse than the Getafe match.

Were you in favour of playing this match?
It was a tough situation. They decided to play, so that can't be an excuse.

Did you have any say in the decision?
They asked me what I thought, and I told the League and FA that it was their decision. I didn't want to play tomorrow.

Is this defeat a big step backwards?
It's unexplainable. We lack heart, strength, and quality. This same thing can't happen to another 14 players. Something was going on in their heads. It wasn't a question of the style of play, it was all in our heads.

Will the new signing help improve the situation?
We're talking about who we have here now.

What happened
I don't know. I am not mad at anyone. It was a team thing. We'll discuss it tomorrow in training.

The four matches Van Nistelrooy and Ronaldo have played together have resulted in losses.
I don't think today was a matter of whether or not Ronaldo and Van Nistelrooy can play together. Neither played well today and missed several easy passes. They received no long deliveries.

How do you feel?
I have a lot running through my mind and am analysing things. I told the players one thing: to control their weight during vacation and Merry Christmas. When a team plays like they did today, we have to assess the situation and speak about it calm manner

When was the last time you lost 3-0?
I don't remember.

Are Diarra and Cassano being punished?
They didn't train on Monday or Tuesday. They were punished. That's not me. They were both niggled.

Real Madrid 0-3 Recreativo: Recreativo's historic win over Real Madrid closes out 2006 on a disappointing note

With the tragic events of this morning’s bus accident, which claimed the lives of four Recreativo Huelva fans on their way to the Spanish capital, looming over Wednesday’s match, Real Madrid and Huelva met in a somber, yet crucial clash for the Whites. Instead of the holiday season atmosphere everyone had hoped for, the game, which marked the last of 2006 for both sides, was a tribute to those who lost their lives and those still recovering from various injuries. Prior to kickoff, the Santiago Bernabéu held a minute of silence, and both teams took the pitch donning black armbands. The 0-0 scoreline reflected most of the first half, until Sinama gave the visitors the lead with a well taken shot. It was much of the same during the second 45 minutes, during which Real Madrid conceded two more goals, first to Uche and then a brilliant free kick by Viqueira. There was no better way for Recre to pay tribute to those who lost their lives than serving Real Madrid their biggest defeat at the Bernabéu this season.

All the build up to tonight's match by Madridistas and Huelva natives alike was marred by the death of four Recre fans and 37 other injured supporters who were part of a coach accident early Wedndesday morning as they made their way to the Spanish capital to watch what was the last match of 2006 for both sides. Everyone expected a great match to honour the memory of those lost, and while it did not go to play as Madrid would have liked, it was a day Recre fans will remember for years to come.

In solidarity with the fans of Recreativo Huelva and the city of Huelva, Real Madrid decided to cancel the tribute to recently named FIFA World Player, Fabio Cannavaro, who made his way into the starting eleven after Committee rescinded the second yellow card he saw on Sunday against Espanyol. David Beckham found his way back onto the right side of the pitch as Fabio Capello again placed his chips on the Double 9 with Ronaldo and Van Nistelrooy leading the Real Madrid attack.

Real Madrid found themselves up against a recently promoted Recreativo Huelva side who have taken the First Division by storm (eighth in the table with 22 points) and who arrived at the Bernabéu with nothing to lose and everything to gain, whether by bringing a smile to the families of those lost or by moving the team closer to a UEFA spot in the table. In a mediocre first half by both sides, the Andalusians were able to open the scoring against a Madridista squad lacking movement in the midfield and unable to complete passes. To change tactics, Fabio Capello made his first modification by telling Beckham to swap sides with Raúl, hoping his men would see more chances on the opponent's goal. Meanwhile, Recre coach Marcelino, who watched from the stands will mobile in hand as he served his one game suspension, ordered his men to open up on the pitch.

While Recre were well-positioned throughout the pitch, the Madridistas looked lethargic and had few opportunities to put the ball in the net during the first 45 minutes. Ramos (min. 5) came inches away from heading in a Beckham cross, which was followed three minutes later by a shot from Ronaldo, who didn't quite get control on the ball by going for precision to curve it by Vellejo. In the closing minutes of the half, Van Nistelrooy had a great effort from outside the box which just missed. Recre were delighted and not at all intimidated by the Bernabéu. In this historic game for the visiting side, it was Sinama Pongolle who gave Huelva the lead. The Frenchman scored his six goal in the League by taking advantage of a defencive error with a great left footed finish.

No signs of scoring
To get the second half off to a jump start, Capello hoped for a spark of creativity by replacing Emerson with Robinho. It was now up to David Beckham and José Mª Gutiérrez, Guti to orchestrate the midfield. But Recre were up to the task. The first five minutes were all Real Madrid. Robinho won a free kick just outside the box, and Beckham looked to whip it in just like he did two weeks ago against Sevilla, but Vallejo made a great save with his right foot. Two minutes later, Uche, last year's top scorer of the Second Division, went right by Cannavaro, slipped behind two defenders, and scored a lovely goal. The Nigerian's score put Real Madrid a long way back with quite a mountain to climb.

Marcelo had gone for pace and youth and it paid off. Recreativo then backed into their half of the pitch to hold Madrid at bay for the remaining 40 minutes. Capello used his last two changes and moved Sergio Ramos to the right wing and replaced Ronaldo with Reyes. The Seville native tried his luck on his first touch of the ball all night, but didn't get enough power or direction behind his shot.

Real Madrid began finding their rhythm, but the result stayed the same and dealt a real blow to the Whites. On the other hand, Recre had no better way to close out 2006 and topped it off with their third score of the night. Viqueira put the nail in the coffin with a free kick into the left corner of Casillas' net. The next League match, and first encounter of 2007, will take place at the Riazor on the first weekend of January.

Official: Cannavaro Named FIFA World Player of the Year

Fabio Cannavaro

Winner of the 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year Award

It's what everyone expected and there were no surprises as Joseph Blatter announced the name of Fabio Cannavaro as the winner of the 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year. The moved Italian centre back thanked the national team coaches and captains by saying, "I would like to express my gratitude to FIFA, the coaches, the captains, and all my teammates that I have ever had."

On Monday at 8 pm CET, the Zurich Opera House hosted the 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year gala, which culminated with the announcement of the World Player of the Year selected by national team coaches and captains. The magical evening dubbed "Football meets Mozart" was hosted by Dutch football legend Ruud Gullit and television presenter Amanda McLane-Attali, and was punctuated with snippets from Mozart's operas and video clips of the exploits of each nominee.

The first trophies and awards presented were those won during the 2006 German World Cup. To kick things off, the Fair Play Trophy was presented to the Spanish and Brazilian national teams, who shared the same number of points. It was followed by the Golden (Klose), Silver (Hernán Crespo) and Bronze (Ronaldo) Boot awards, and then the Golden Ball (Zidane), Silver Ball (Cannavaro), and Bronze Ball (Pirlo). Italy's Buffon was honoured as the Best Goalkeeper but was unable to attend the event.

The icing on the cake

After delighting those in attendence with a new Mozart piece, the two most magical moments of the night arrived. First came the announcement of the 2006 FIFA Woman World Player, bestowed upon the Brazilian, Marta, who received a warm round of applause from fellow countryman Ronaldo. Minutes later it was Fabio Cannavaro, Ronaldinho and Zidane's turn to find out who would be named FIFA World Player 2006. Edgar Davids, Frank Beckenbauer, and Lothar Mattaüs assisted Joseph Blatter with the announcement. What everyone had predicted since Sunday was true, as the FIFA President read the Italian player's name as the big winner of the night.

“It's a huge honour to be here among so many renown players. This has been a very important year for me and I am very happy and touched. It was an incredible year. I won the championship with Juve, the World Cup, the Golden Ball, and this great distinction brings a golden year to a close. I would like to express my gratitude to FIFA, the coaches, the captains, and all my teammates that I have ever had. I dedicate this award to Italian football, as everyone knows about the problems it has gone through. This should be a symbol of rebirth for an important system of international football,” stated Cannavaro.

Club support

President Ramón Calderón and Real Madrid's Sporting Director Pedja Mijatovic accompanied Cannavaro, Raúl and Ronaldo on their travels to Zurich to attend the gala celebrated at the Opera House. As was the case during the presentation of the Golden Ball last month, the Madridista President wanted Cannavaro to feel support from Real Madrid during such an important moment of his football career.

The President shared the evening with his Barcelona counterpart, Joan Laporta, who saw his hopes for Ronaldinho winning the trophy for the third straight year dashed.

FIFA WORLD PLAYER 2006 RANKING:

1. Fabio Cannavaro, (Juventus / Real Madrid), 480 points.

Fabio Cannavaro: "I'm traveling to Geneva tomorrow, but I have no idea who has won."

Fabio Cannavaro was unjustly sent of in minute 53. Replay footage clearly shows he hit the ball with his head, not his hand, which explains the player's anger at the end of the game.

"I didn't like being sent off and it's hard to accept. The ball didn't hit my hand. Thank God we won the match in the end, because we needed the points after the defeat in Seville. Espanyol are a good team that, until today, stood undefeated here for a very long time. We will surely be champions if we win every game. We don't think about how other teams are performing. I hope I can play on Wednesday if my red card is rescinded."

"I don't know if I'm FIFA World Player or not. My teammates told me in the dressing room. I'm traveling to Geneva tomorrow, but I have no idea who has won. I did know about the Ballon d'Or beforehand, but I don't know about this one yet. It would be amazing to win it. This has been a spectacular year for me, as I won the World Cup, the Italian League, I joined Real Madrid..."

Cannavaro Nets FIFA World Player Award?

According to speculation coming from Spain, the Real Madrid defender has won this new trophy following the Golden Ball award presented to him in the past weeks by France Football.

Up till a few days ago, everything seemed to point towards a third consecutive triumph for Ronaldinho in the FIFA World Player Award, voted by all the national team coaches and captains of the world.

However, latest rumours are indicating a big margin win by the world champion over Zidane and Ronaldinho respectively.

According to this Spanish source, Radio station Cadena Ser, Fabio Cannavaro received 498 votes, followed by retired Zinedine Zidane with 454 votes and surprisingly Ronaldinho in third place with 'just' 380 votes.

This would crown an amazing year for the Italian defender who won the Scudetto with Juventus, followed by the World Cup and the Golden Ball award.

The award will be handed by FIFA on Monday at the Opera House in Zurich, Switzerland.

Fabio Capello: "We stayed calm and played very well"

Fabio Capello was satisfied with the match. He highlighted his team's efforts, particularly after they were down to ten men due to an "unfair" refereeing decision. "I'm very satisfied," he said, "We stayed calm and played very well."

"As we were unfairly left with ten men, it was only natural for us to suffer in the second half. Cannavaro hit the ball with his head. I'm very satisfied with the team's work. We played quality football while keeping calm. I liked our performance throughout the entire match. We had more chances than they did in the first half."

"We will appeal the referee's decision to send Cannavaro off. Fabio should win FIFA World Player as he was the best in the World Cup. Nevertheless, he's bound to be criticised again."

"Espanyol are a great team that hadn't lost since Matchday 4. They are a tough team to defeat. I have twenty men on my squad and I line up those players I think are better suited for each game."

Real Madrid 1-0 Espanyol: Real Madrid put an end to Espanyol's great patch

Tonight's second to last match before Real Madrid take their well-earned Christmas break gained in rhythm and intensity as the game wore on. Espanyol fought hard for a victory, but, once again, Real Madrid fell back on their philosophy that style points don't count, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy scored the Whites' lone goal, which proved to be the game winner. Despite being down a man after Cannavaro was sent off for a controversial handball, the Whites stuck to their guns and stood ground to an ever more defiant and dangerous Espanyol. It was the Catalan side's first defeat since Matchday 4.

Espanyol stepped onto Montjuïc Stadium's pitch oozing with confidence having won their last two League matches against Sevilla and Atletico Madrid and not having suffered a defeat since their fourth match of the season. Meanwhile, Real Madrid were coming off a heartbreaking loss to the current La Liga leaders and kicked off tonight's game sluggish and unconvincing. Fabio Capello made the decision to line up Robinho and Reyes on the wings rather than playing Ronaldo and Diarra. As the minutes ticked by, the Whites gradually started feeling more comfortable in Montjuïc, finding their own pace and flow to the game.

Only minutes into the match, things took a turn for the worst as José Antonio Reyes received a harsh late challenge from Zabaleta. The Sevillian player seemed to be badly hurt, but soon recovered and contributed to the defensive chores which were greatly compounded against the Espanyol attack. The Catalan front line had proved to be very dangerous in previous matches, and tonight was no different with Tamudo menacing around the box as De la Peña served him several quality balls. Luis García had the home team's best chance in minute 28. Bringing the ball forward, De la Peña played it into Moha. The latter soon found García, who managed to pull off a first touch shot that sailed over the crossbar.

Meanwhile, the Whites were shaping up and had their chances shortly after minute 20, mainly by way of medium-range strikes. Real Madrid's best opportunity arrived after an outstanding pass from Raúl to Van Nistelrooy. Anxious to get on the score-sheet, the Dutchman controlled the ball inside the small box and was phenomenally tackled by Torrejón just as he was about to shoot, preventing the first goal from finding the back of the net near the 30-minute mark. The even, hard-fought first half ended with a 0-0 draw.

Casillas shines
There is no question that Iker Casillas was one of the top players of Matchday 15, which just also happened to be the Madridista keeper's 250th League match of his career. Aside from making great efforts to stop Espanyol's free kicks and set pieces, the former youth system player proved to be decisive throughout the 90 minutes. The Whites' keeper thwarted Tamudo's run towards the goal outside the box close to halftime, cleared a great shot by Pandiani in the 67th minute, and prevented the Periquitos from equalising the score in the last few minutes of the game.

Goal, send-off and Jerichonian defence
Real Madrid re-entered Montjuïc renewed with energy and ready to put the game away. Fabio Capello moved his lines up, allowing Guti to create in the midfield and Raúl to reach the opponent's box more frequently. And in less than five minutes, the Whites scored the goal they had been seeking. Guti feinted around a defender and played the ball to Van Nistelrooy, who was standing with his back on goal. The Dutch striker controlled the pass beautifully, spun around, and netted a powerful shot past Kameni, who was helpless and baffled by Van Nistelrooy's technique. Many fans in the stands were heard roaring in celebration.
But minutes later, Pérez Lasa spoiled the moment with an appalling call. The referee sent Fabio Cannavaro off with his second booking thinking the Italian had hit the ball with his hand, when it actually hit his head. It seems this pitch will never be relieved of controversy after all. Nevertheless, Real Madrid stuck to their guns, and with the incorporation of Mejía, Diarra, and Raúl Bravo, formed a Jerichonian defence, while captain Raúl proved omnipresent at all times.

The match broke wide open with the ball going back and forth from one area to the other. Both teams had their chances, and Míchel Salgado's perfectly timed challenge was decisive in thwarting Tamudo and Luis Garcia's attack in the 78-minute mark. Espanyol never threw in the towel and their four forwards on the pitch seemed to be qeueing up to put the ball in, but to no avail. The most effective Real Madrid side of recent years left Montjuïc with three points in hand.

MATCH REPORT:
REAL MADRID: Casillas; Salgado, Cannavaro, Ramos, Roberto Carlos; Emerson, Guti, Reyes (Diarra), Robinho (Mejía, 55'); Raúl and Van Nistelrooy (Raúl Bravo, 85').

THE GAGO SIGNING, IN ITS FINAL STRAIGHT LINE

The president of Real Madrid, Ramon Calderón, will meet with the maximum leader of Boca Juniors, Mauricio Macri, at night of this Saturday to close the crossing of Gago.

Ramon Calderón, president of Real Madrid, and Mauricio Macri, president of Boca Juniors, delayed to the night of this Saturday their meeting predicted at noon to negotiate the crossing of the Argentine midfield player Fernando Gago.

Macri will approach the price of the crossing, estimated in 20 million euros, once the soccer player, through his agent, Marcelo Lombilla, already has agreed to the agreement with Real Madrid for the six next campaigns plus half of the present season. Macri arrived late at Madrid and all the agenda anticipated by both parts has undergone a delay.

According to what was declared to EFE by Marcelo Lombilla in the last hours: Gago would like to be Sunday already in Montjuic to see his new team playing against Espanyol.

Fabio Capello press conference: "Espanyol are a good team with quality players"

Talk concerning Gago and Higuaín dominated the Italian coach's press conference. "Higuaín is a quality player and we need Gago, but we'll talk about the latter when he's signed," said Capello. He also wanted to talk about Espanyol who he considers to be "a good team" as "they haven't lost since Matchday 4."

Will Ronaldo and Van Nistelrooy play together?
I'll have to think about it. Ronaldo has been training since Thursday. He doesn't have any physical problems anymore, but I nevertheless have to think about it.

What's your opinion on the Champions League draw?
Every Last 16 game is complicated. Bayern Munich are a good team and they will be more rested and fresher than us when the time comes because their Christmas break is much longer than ours. It's always hard to play against them.

Don't you think your players are being too optimistic?
One always has to be optimistic. In order to get to the final you have to defeat everyone. I didn't want to be paired with Chelsea or Arsenal and I didn't really mind who else we faced.

What will Higuaín bring to the team?
We are signing young players with a bright future ahead of them. He is a very fast player that moves around a lot. He is good in the attack and has a lot of quality overall. We'll talk about Gago when we sign him.

What does Higuaín have that Mata doesn't?
Mata is a quality player, but he needs to build up more. He has a goal scoring instinct. All in all, he is different to Higuaín.

Will Higuaín join the first team in January?
Let's wait until we make all the signings to decide, shall we?

Does Cassano still count for you?
He is as important as every other player. Come January, we will play every Sunday and every Wednesday, so I will definitely have a use for him.

Do you prefer Barcelona to lose the World Club Championship?
I don't care what they do.

Is the centre back position something to work on?
We know exactly what to do, but I'm not going to share that with you. We'll do something about that position.

Are you thinking about bringing Woodgate back?
Not until the end of the season.

What do you think of Espanyol?
Well, they stand undefeated since Matchday 4. They are a good team with quality players. They are convinced they can defeat anybody.

Their attacking front, formed by De la Peña and Tamudo, is something to seriously think about.
They know each other very well and the move fast. We'll try to stop them.

How come you're thinking of signing another centre back when there are so many on the squad?
We are trying to sign Gago, who is a midfielder. We know we need him. We think we can improve on that position.

You really think the team needs Gago?
Yes, I do, if not we wouldn't sign him. We have good players but we can always improve and we have to sign new ones in order to do so. He is a good player.

How are Guti and Helguera doing?
Guti is fine and Helguera is still recovering. I think the latter will rejoin the team next week.

Squad list:Beckham and Helguera out

There are no novelties in the squad list for Sunday's match in Barcelona. Beckham -suspended- and Helguera -injured- don't make the list, their spots being taken by youth system players Sergio and Casilla. Diarra, who was suspended last week, returns.

Twenty players will leave at 7 pm CET this evening for Barcelona to face Espanyol in Montjuic tomorrow. Capello will be able to count with all his men save Beckham, who is suspended, and Helguera, who is still injured.

The defender hasn't made the squad list in the end despite having started doing field work exercises this week for the first time since he was injured on 21 November in the match against Olympique Lyonnais. His place has been taken by youth system player Sergio, who has been included in every squad list since the match against Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine. Casilla has also made the list as the team's third keeper.

Beckham hasn't been able to make the list due to having been booked five times this season, but he will be back on the team for Wednesday's League match against Recreativo Huelva. The week's three injured players, namely Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo and Guti have recovered and will travel to Barcelona.

SQUAD LIST:
# Goalkeepers: Casillas, Diego López and Casilla.
# Defenders: Salgado, Sergio Ramos, Cannavaro, Pavón, Mejía, Roberto Carlos, Raúl Bravo and Sergio.
# Midfielders: Emerson, Diarrá, Guti, Reyes and Robinho.

Players' reactions to the draw:"Bayern Munich are a complicated rival, but we'll win by playing our best football"

The players talked all morning amongst themselves about the Champions League draw. During training, the squad kept thinking about who their next European rivals would be. When they learned they would be facing Bayern Munich, some of them shared their impressions with the press at the end of this morning's session.

CANNAVARO
"They are a very experienced team and they're used to winning. I hope we impose our quality against them. I'm happy with the draw because every time I've played against them I've always won, except for a game when I was at Inter Milan which we lost 3-1. Nevertheless, everything changes now that I'm at Real Madrid. We are going to fight for victory in order to get through to the quarterfinals."

BECKHAM
"I'm happy with the draw. It will be a tough match, but I'm satisfied nevertheless. It will be a special game for me because it will make me remember the Champions League final I won against them when I was at United. I have a good feeling about this."

ROBINHO
"They are a great team with great players, but that won't stop us and we will fight hard to win the competition. Bayern aren't in great shape right now, so we hope they don't get any better and that we keep improving in order to win easily. It will be a tough match, but we will be ready for it when it comes. We don't really care who and where we have to play."

ROBERTO CARLOS
"We know them well and we always suffer against them, but we can win and we will use the first match at the Bernabéu to try to settle the round. We have weaponry enough to gain a victory; we are Real Madrid after all, which is always a strong asset. This is our competition. I know their stadium well and it brings back great memories. Both games will be complicated, but I'm convinced of this being a great year for us because we are concentrated and ready to win it all. We all had our favourite choice of opponent. I personally preferred to play against Liverpool, but in the end it doesn't really matter who we face. We have to go through to quarterfinals playing our best football."

Mijatovic: "We Can Make It Through"

Real Madrid sporting director and ex-striker Pedja Mijatovic seemed satisfied with the Champions League draw held in Nyon that saw Fabio Capello’s ‘Merengues’ paired off with Felix Magath’s ‘Die Roten’. Both teams have met several times in Europe with disparate luck in different editions.

"I think that, although Bayern is a great team, we can be content with this rival and I also feel that we can make it through to the quarter-finals”, explained Mijatovic.

"I’d have preferred to play the first leg away, but that’s not an option, so we now know our rival and it’s time to start planning the two matches”, he reflected.

“Both teams know each other very well, both by reputation and on the field. That means that it’s going to be a vibrant clash both at home and in Germany”, he concluded.

The first leg will be played at the Santiago Bernabéu with the decider set for the Allianz Arena, both matches a fortnight apart.

Champions League draw results: Real Madrid to face Bayern Munich in the second round of the competition

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich will face each other in the second round of the 2006/07 Champions League. The German side are a classic rival of the Whites' in the competition and will once again prove to be a tough rival on Real Madrid's way to winning their tenth European Cup. The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium will receive Bayern Munich either on 20 or 21 February 2007, while the return game will be held in Munich on 6 or 7 March.

Bayern Munich will be Real Madrid's rival in the second round of the Champions League. The German side are an "old foe" of the Whites, against whom they've played some of the most vibrant and exciting final rounds of the competition in recent years. Bayern still have some of the players they had in their ranks when they faced Real Madrid three consecutive years. They are an aggressive and creative side that stands strong in their new stadium, the Allianz Arena, but that proves much weaker in away games.

Bayern Munich may not be the dominant team of the Bundesliga, but they are still strong, currently holding the fourth position behind Werder Bremmen, Shalke 04 and Stuttgart, who are complicating things for Felix Magath's men in a competition that relies heavily on regularity. Nevertheless, they are only three points away from the top spot and they are the best performing team in home games.

The principal difference to the team this season is the absence of their star, Michael Ballack, who is currently playing for Mourinho's Chelsea. His substitute is a young Polish player named Lucas Podolski, a left footed forward with a natural instinct to score. He is normally accompanied in the attack by veterans Pizarro and Roy Makaay.

Their midfield is guarded by two important players, Van Bommel -known to Spanish crowds for his brief spell at Barcelona- and Schweinsteiger -who has a similar style to Effenberg's. Their defense is comprised by Lahm as left back -the best in his position after Roberto Carlos- Sagnol as right back and Lucio. Legendary keeper Oliver Kahn still guards their goal.

The Teutonic squad also holds other quality players, such as Sebastián Deisler, -who has never really had the chance of shining due to his frailty- Owen Hargreaves Salihamidzic -one of the surviving members from the classic clashes with the Whites- and Roque Santa Cruz, a very good attacking alternative for the Germans.

The first match will be played in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium either the 20 or 21 February 2007, and the return game will take place in Munich on the 6 or 7 March. The winners of the second round of the competition will enter a new draw held on 9 March in Athens to decide which teams face each other in the quarterfinals.

Official: Real Sign Higuain

Real Madrid have confirmed that Gonzalo Higuain will be joining the club in January after they agreed a fee with his club River Plate.

The Argentinian is considered one of South America’s hottest young talents and is set to be presented by the club on Thursday 21 December at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium's Presidential balcony.

Higuain has agreed a deal that will take him through to 30 June 2013, Real confirmed on their official website.

The player is believed to have cost in the region of 13 million euros and comes equipped with an EU passport as he was born in France.

A number of clubs including Chelsea and Manchester United were said to be interested in the youngster, but Real always appeared most serious about their interest as they look to rejuvenate an ageing front-line.

Higuain could soon be joined by Real’s other major January target Fernando Gago of Boca Juniors.

Real Madrid CF and River Plate have reached an agreement for the transfer of Gonzalo Higuaín. The player will join the squad on 1 January and will play for Real Madrid through 30 June 2013. Real And River Reach Higuaín Agreement

It appears that the first Albiceleste reinforcement of the season will be heading across the pond and bulking up Capello’s squad at the White House.

River Plate striking star Gonzalo Higuaín, recently involved in a minor imbroglio that saw him side with Argentina over his native France, is now a Real Madrid player.

Ramón Calderón appears to have sealed the deal for around 13 million Euros, 2 million higher than the Merengue President had intended to spend, but considered a necessary outlay to rejuvenate the ageing Real Madrid attack.

The extra effort was seen as worthwhile as Higuaín comes equipped with EU passport unlike recent Flu signing Marcelo.

Gonzalo Higuaín will arrive in Madrid after the New Year, donning a Real Madrid jersey for the next six and a half years.

After losing the Apertura tournament with River arch-rivals Boca Juniors, midfielder Fernando Gago is hoped to be next in line.

Fans have taken certain declarations against the player and President Maurício Macri will be more amenable to a reasonable sale.

Capello to Onda Madrid: "We are a good, fighting and quality team"

Fabio Capello was a guest on programme "El Partido de la Una" on Spanish radio station Onda Madrid. The Italian coach said his team play a "very particular style of football" and that they need to have continuity. He said people don't respect Real Madrid as much as they did ten years ago. "Someone even threw a pool ball on the pitch in the match against Sevilla," he said. "I told Sergio Ramos I had never seen anything like it."

THE CAPELLO TOUCH
"It's a trend nowadays to be a Capello detractor, but in order to win one must have a proper team with a particular style of playing football. I told my players this morning that we are a very good team capable of winning games and the League, but that we didn't have continuity. We sometimes have spectacular moments, but we should have them much more often."

"We must think positively because we have played some excellent matches. It's important to analyse how we and our adversaries performed after the match. We are achieving more and more things each day. We are a good, fighting and quality team."

"We now finally feel proud of playing for this Club."

WINTER TRANSFER WINDOW
"Real Madrid may make new signings in order to improve the squad. Time is our best ally because with it we'll improve. The players we may sign are good, young and have a great future ahead of them. There are no longer any real superstar players out there, and if there are, their clubs don't want to let them go."

COMPARISONS WITH BARÇA
"Each team has its own style, which is determined by the players on the squad. Real Madrid and Barcelona have different styles. If we play as defensively as Barcelona did against Werder Bremen the Bernabéu crowd would fiercely whistle and boo at us."

"I don't think Barça have played spectacularly well in their last few games."

RAUL
"I ask him to be our leader. He is the captain and he is very important for us. Captains do more than exchange pennents at the start of each game. They are very important people within the group."

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DRAW
"Chelsea are the most complete and solid team. Manchester United have a lot of quality and speed. Arsenal play good football even without Henry."

SPANISH CROWDS
"People don't have the same respect for Real Madrid they had ten years ago. Someone even threw a pool ball on the pitch in Seville. I told Sergio Ramos I had never seen anything like it. I remembered Spanish crowds differently. I remember them as great football fans who went to football games in order to have a good time, but their attitude nowadays isn't appropriate for children to watch or be around. Kids learn how to behave from grown-ups and right now they aren't setting a very good example."

Capello thinks "A draw would have been the most fair result"

Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello spoke to the press to analyse his team's third defeat of the season. The difference in the match, according to the Italian, is that Sevilla took advantage of their opportunities. “Scoring is what counts, and we didn't," stated Capello.

Your thoughts on the match.
We could have won after taking the lead, but Sevilla scored twice. Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo had our best chances. We could have scored our second, but we didn't.

How do you think your team looked?
I am happy with their performance. We're going to stay on course without any problems. This is football for you. I am convinced that we'll continue on top.

What do Real Madrid play?
Football.

Your thoughts on Sevilla.
I think they did well. Their players are fast. They didn't have many chances because Iker made a lot of saves. Sevilla are Super Cup champions, so they must be a good team.

Why did you take Míchel Salgado out?
Because he had been booked and I didn't want him to get sent off.

And Ronaldo?
Ronaldo was tired and a bit niggled, as was Guti. It's Ronaldo's second match and he's still not in top physical form.

How do you think Ronaldo played?
He had the chance to score, but didn't. Ronaldo is always a threat when he has the ball. He fought hard.

Do you think Salgado deserved to be sent off?
Míchel didn't do anything that would make the fans demand that he be sent off.

Is it a fair result for Sevilla or an unfair result for Real Madrid?
A draw would have been the most fair result. Scoring goals is what counts.

Sevilla 2-1 Real Madrid:Real Madrid lose just their second away match to a Sevilla squad still undefeated at home

All the hype lived up to its expectation. Not only was the best away team visiting the side with the best home record in the League, but it was second against third in the table. David Beckham put the Whites up with a wonderful strike in minute 12, but Sevilla answered right back and Chevanton beat Casillas with 15 minutes to play to give the Andalusian side the win. It was a tense match with all the drama and controversy you would expect from a Real Madrid-Sevilla clash, but it just wasn't Madrid's night.

Electricity was in the air in Sevilla. Second against third, and both sides eager to find out what was happening hundreds of kilometres away in Barcelona. But there was news to be made at the Sánchez Pizjuán as well. Ronaldo and Van Nistelrooy would be sharing duties in attack. It was the first time both killers started a match all season. Fabio Capello lay his cards on the table from the get go. David Beckham got his fourth start of the season to become the Englishman with the most matches played in the Spanish League (104), while Guti also made his return after missing two matches to injury. All that remained to be seen was whether the Italian coach would play a 4-4-2 or his typical 4-2-3-1, which might prove difficult with the absence of Mahamadou Diarra.

It didn't take long to figure out what formation Capello had opted for. There were still remains of the giant mosaic that the Sevillista fans formed in the stands of the Pizjuán when the midfield line of four stood out. Beckham and Raúl positioned themselves along the wings with Emerson and Guti steering the ship from the centre of the pitch. Standing fast, Real Madrid withstood the rapid start by the home side without any real concern, except for the break-away along the left flank by Adriano (6').

There were only two solutions for the Madridista squad to stop the ongoing Andalusion threat: maintain possession and touch the ball. At first, the football mostly found a Sergio Ramos who had to brush off all the jeers from the local fans who still haven't forgiven him for leaving. There had been no shots in the first ten minutes, but the game started to bubble and Beckham proved he's still got it by putting the Whites ahead with a free kick from outside the Sevilla box. It was a wonderful strike by the Englishman, who whipped it right over Palop and into the far corner of the net (12').

Sevillista equaliser
It was the perfect setting. Real Madrid had weathered the storm and had the lead. But this Sevilla squad is undefeated at home for a reason. In what initially looked like an innocent play, Luis Fabiano's left-footed cannon struck the crossbar. The ricochet fell at the feet of Kanouté, who put the ball past Iker's right side to level the match. Two shots on goal -one for each side- and two scores.

Madrid were the better team during the latter half of the first 45 minutes. The team looked to Guti to create in the midfield as he received one knock after another. As the pace slowed after such an intense 15 minutes, the Whites began taking advantage of their forwards' mobility and ability to lose their marker. In the 20th minute, Madrid found themselves on the counterattack, and Raúl was through with only the keeper to beat, but Ronaldo found Roberto Carlos on the left, and the defender got off a poor shot that Palop saved. Five minutes later, Ronaldo showed good, patient build-up, but was disappointed by the lack of accuracy that saw his shot sail wide.

The best chances of taking the lead came in the 35th minute, when Roberto Carlos hit the outside of the post -great burst of speed by the 33-year old-, and in the 42nd, when Beckham unexpectedly drilled a low free kick from the same spot the first goal came from. Meanwhile, Sevilla failed to knock in a cross-shot by Adriano. Pinned on their side of the pitch, the Sevillistas gave a last ditch effort with the 12th man really behind them, but Muñiz Fernández blew the whistle to bring the first half to a close.

Scintillating second half
After a cracking first half, Real Madrid made one change before taking the pitch after the break. Salgado had been booked in the 42nd minute and was replaced by Álvaro Mejía, who took over as a centre back while Sergio Ramos covered the right flank.

Sevilla maintained their pressure, and Jesús Navas and Alves tried their luck but never really tested Iker's reflexes. The Whites tried to answer back with a Van Nistelrooy header, but to no avail. It wasn't a tidy first ten minutes and the game was there for the taking by either side.

The Madridistas had several more chances. A surprised Cannavaro found the ball at his feet and would have been left alone in front of Palop had he controlled the ball (58'). Minutes later, Ruud Van Nistelrooy linked up perfectly with Ronaldo. The Brazilian was one-on-one with the keeper, but Palop did well to keep his eye on the ball to save it.

Both coaches needed fresh legs and fresh ideas on the pitch. Robinho came in for Ronie, and shortly after, Beckham came inches away from giving Madrid the lead. It was almost his second brace against Sevilla in as many seasons. With minutes ticking off the clock, it looked like both sides would settle for sharing the points.

Madrid's pace slowed with Ronie out, and Sevilla again tried to protect their proud home record. Unfortunately for the Whites, they were successful. The ball sat up perfectly for Chevantón off a cross, and the Uruguayan showed great agility to get it by Casillas. It was 2-1 with 15 minutes to play. Capello substituted Guti for Reyes, but Sevilla didn't give way. Capello: "They are a dangerous team"

Following the last training session of the week prior to traveling to Sevilla, Fabio Capello attended the media in the press room at Real Madrid City. The Italian considers Sevilla a "dangerous" team that is playing so well thanks to all its "talented players."

Why would you stress not losing this match?
It's always important when two top teams play. Both have very talented players. There's a lot riding on this match.

Who is the favourite?
It's 50-50.

Madrid have won five away games. Would winning be a real turning point?
It will be a hard match. We have won games on the road and they have won at home. It will be tough for both sides. They are very dangerous at home.

Do you want the same level of pressure that the team put on Barcelona?
Every game is different. They have very good players, as does Barça, but the two teams play very differently. We have to adjust our game. We always need to pressure the opponent's defence and not let them play their game.

How do Sevilla an Barça differ?
Barça get a lot of touches in, perhaps more than any other team in the world. Sevilla play more direct, straightforward football.

Are they similar styles?
I don't think so. Every team has their own style. A team touches when they have to, but also gets in deep passes forward. Barça didn't touch very much against Werder. They had two long passes and one found Gudjhonsen.

Will the team notice Diarra's absence?
We have recovered Emerson and we hope his leg doesn't bother him.

The World Rankings have Sevilla number one.
The rankings look at all the numbers. They are a team playing very well, and they have a coach that I really admire.

Sevilla are a balanced team that create in the midfield. Will the game be decided in the center of the pitch?
They have been building a good team over the last few years and have adjusted to their needs. That's why they are balanced. We can't just assume they are good in the midfield. You don't win without good players. We are all good coaches, but you don't win without players.

Are they the model to use?
That's the project. We started signing in July, which was very late.

Do Sevilla know how to use the wings better than any other team?
It's not just how they use the wing. They have good players who know how to take advantage of them. You can use the wings if you have players with good break away speed and who can cross well. Sevilla are strong in that area. They are all good and can cross very well.

Will Beckham play in the centre midfield?
We'll decide that tomorrow.

Do you think Beckham can do well in the centre?
He's played along the wings a lot, but he's also played in the centre; in the Eurocup and World Cup for example. You have to play younger players like Nieto where they are comfortable. But Beckham has a lot more experience than Nieto. David can play on both wings.

Will Ronaldo and Van Nistelrooy play together?
I don't know. We haven't had much time to try them out together. They scheduled our match for Saturday after we got back from a very long trip.

Are your players tired?
Some are. The pitch was very soft.

And Guti?
He has recovered, as have Cannavaro and Ramos. They are all on the squad list.

Has the match been tarnished by the statements made by Fuentes?
I don't want to talk about that. The Club has lawyers who will take care of it.

Are the players offended?
You have to be very careful when something like this happens. The players are not offended.

Do they have blood tests?
In Italy, yes. They don't here after matches. But on other occasions they have. It's something the doctors are in charge of.
