Real close on Carlos successor
Real Madrid are reportedly close to finalising the capture of Brazilian left-back Marcelo.
The 18-year-old currently plies his trade and, having recently been called up to the Brazil national squad, is widely regarded in his homeland as the long-term successor to Roberto Carlos at international level.
It now appears he could well succeed Carlos at club level also with Real hoping to secure his services in the January transfer window.
The Primera titans have dispatched director of football Predrag Mijatovic's right-hand man, Franco Baldini, to Brazil to close out a deal.
A fee of around €6.5 million (£4 million) has been mooted for the teenager who is regarded as one of the finest young defenders in South America.
Once Baldini has completed the transfer of Marcelo he is expected to head on to Argentina where he will open negotiations for Boca Juniors starlet Fernando Gago.
The Argentine youngster is also being courted by Barcelona, but Real are hoping to nip in and steal a march on their eternal rivals.
