Tribute to Cannavaro: The Italian presented the Bernabéu with the Balon d'Or and the FIFA World Player trophy
Real Madrid's centre back and captain of the Italian national team receieved a deserved tribute on behalf of Real Madrid fans in honour of all the awards he won last season.
The celebrations that took place after the Espanyol match began before the football was ever kicked off. A giant circular canvas reading “Thank you Cannavaro” covered the centre circle as the Madridista centre back was honoured for the awards he won last season. The 75,000 spectators who filled the stands gave the Italian a standing ovation as he collected his trophies – the Balon d'Or and the FIFA World Player - from Real Madrid President of Honour, Alfredo Di Stefano. Cannavaro then offered his titles to the fans who applauded in return.Once the match was over, Cannavaro was presented with a plaque and a watch in the Presidential Balcony. Higuaín also received a watch in honour of his first goal at the Santiago Bernabéu.
