The current contract of the former England captain expires at the end of this season, and it the imminent talks will be the first with Real's new regime.

The contract negotiations are expected to revolve around Real Madrid's share of Beckham's image rights. The club are entitled to 50 per cent under his current contract.

The ex-Manchester United man earns a reported £4 million a year in wages, but could be available on a Bosman free transfer at the end of the season, putting his representatives in a strong bargaining position as thy seek attractive terms for a two-year extension.

New Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon reckons Beckham is close to signing an extension, but this is the first time actual talks have been held.

Calderon is keen to retain Beckham because of the player's global appeal.

And although coach Fabio Capello has left Beckham on the bench for the last three matches, he also wants to keep th player at the Bernabeu.

Calderon last week told the club's official website: "Beckham's new contract will be sorted out in the next 15 to 20 days, because the club and coach Fabio Capello are very pleased with him."
