Fabio Capello: "The crowd's criticism is completely fair"
Real Madrid fans wave white handkerchiefs and papers at coach Fabio Capello during the match as a protestation sign
After the Real Madrid-Levante match, the Italian trainer sat down, as usual, in the press room of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium and answered all the questions that the media had regarding the game. He said that the referee had a direct influence on the final result, but spoke favourably of the many and different occasions of his players in front of the opponent's goal.
What do you think of today's result?
As a result, it is very negative, but in terms of effort I cannot say much to my players. They don't understand why a referee would come to the Bernabeu and officiate the game as horribly as he did.
Who is to blame for the defeat?
I think that it is always the coach, because he's the one that ultimately makes the calls. But we had five very clear scoring opportunities during the match by Raúl, Higuaín and Van Nistelrooy. After the game, I tried to cheer up the boys in the dressing room.
Have you thought of resigning?
No, I want to see my contract through. But the crowd's criticism is completely fair. I've always said that I am convinced that we will win something this year. I thank our diehard ultras because they have helped us out and offered their support.
What went wrong today?
We try to do our job well. We had five very clear chances. But that's how football is. Teams come here, they sit real deep, all the way in the back and then they get a penalty awarded. You can lose with an action of this sort, like we did today.
Was the team's attack dull and uncouth?
We had six or seven chances on goal and on top of that we had three penalties that went uncalled. They shot once, so the result is completely and utterly unfair. They're a strong squad when they sit back in their defensive zone and they have a powerful aerial game. We were also quite unlucky with our shot which sliced the crossbar.
Is your squad under par?
We have some important players who are injured, like Cicinho or Roberto Carlos, who really contribute in attack. Marcelo is also injured. We're waiting for their recovery to have a fully operative squad. But these are the players I have now.
You have been real critical with the referee.
My players said that there were several penalties during the length of the match. I saw two very clear ones from the bench.
Was this the type of game in which Beckham should have been called up?
The thing about Beckham is that he's been here three and a half years and the results haven't been that great. We are trying a new avenue, with young players, while we wait for other important ones to rejoin the squad. I stand by my decisions. For example, he played against Deportivo and we lost.
Do you feel like you have failed?
No. We're there in the League and very much alive in the Champions League. Today, the result was very negative and we failed to take advantage of a unique opportunity.
