Guti: "We must be a much more solid team in the second leg of the League"
Real Madrid's second captain, Guti, considers the signing of Gago and Higuaín to have been a necessary move by the Club. "It's good for young players to join the team because they bring strength and guts to the squad," said Guti. "In order for us to be strong contenders in the three competitions we must have a very large squad. I want to play. Gago and I are compatible with each other. I don't care where I play."
How do you think Gago's doing?
He's doing well, like every other new signing. They're all dying to play. They're young and we must give them some time to adapt to European football. They are all very good players.
Do you think they're here to reinfoce the team after the defeat against Recreativo Huelva?
They're not here to save the team. They're here to compliment some positions the coach thought to be weak. We must give the impression of being a solid and united team in order to prevent matches like that against Recreativo from happening again.
Do you think the signings of Marcelo, Higuaín and Gago were necessary?They must have been, if not they wouldn't have been made. It was very clear to the Club that they had to make some new signings, so they went ahead and made them.
If Gago plays, the style of the team will be totally different. Which style do you feel more comfortable with?
I feel comfortable with both styles. We have a smart coach who knows how we must play at any given moment. I think it's ridiculuos to even raise the question.
Does Gago remind you of Redondo?
Yes, both for his looks and his style. He is more of an attacker than Redondo ever was. The latter sustained the team well and didn't get so close to goal.
Times are difficult for kids in the youth system with the Club's new signing policy.
Yes, they are, but they've always been, even before this new policy was born. The first team must be balanced with experienced players and young players with guts and strength.
The last time you beat Deportivo in Riazor was 14 years ago.
It won't be easy to defeat them because they are a strong team with a very intimidating crowd. I'm sure they will prove to be strong against us despite having recently gone through a bad spell. They will surely be the young, dynamic team they were at the start of the season.
What do you expect of the second leg?
We must be more solid and regular. I personally hope to play more.
Do you feel more comfortable as a forward?I don't care where I play. I only care about being on the pitch. I've been playing more as an attacker, but I won't care if this changes. Positioning doesn't matter to me. If I play as a forward I will have to score more goals, that's all.
Are you and Gago compatible with each other?
Yes. Players arrive to be teammates, not rivals. A club like this can't just focus on one of the three competitions they play in. In order to be strong contenders in every competition we need a very large squad.
Have you talked about the match against Recreativo again?
We can't allow a match like that to happen again. We can't afford to give more points away at home. The Bernabéu should be a safe fort for us.
