Fernando Gago:"I don't feel any pressure and I'm ready to play on Sunday"
As soon as he started training with Real Madrid, Fernando Gago was on the covers of every sports journal in Spain, but the Argentinian midfielder doesn't feel any pressure. He just wants to play in order to help the team.
Have your papers been sorted so you can play against Deportivo on Sunday?
Everything's in order. I'm ready to play on Sunday if the coach wants me to.
It seems from training that you may be a starter in Riazor.
Yes, it does, but the coach will make up his own mind. I try to give my all in every training session so that he notices me. I also want to earn my teammates' respect.
Are you surprised with training as a starter so soon?
I work to help the team the best possible way. During training, I try to get in shape and get to know my teammates better.
Which player has surprised you the most?
They all have. It's a dream for me to be here and share a training pitch with all of them. I want Real Madrid to keep improving.
Do you know anything about your rivals in the League, particularly Deportivo?
I always watched Spanish matches when I was in Argentina. I still try to do so here in order to learn how my future rivals play.
It seems many Argentinian and Brazilian players have missed their flights during the return from the holidays, but not you.
That's their problem. I don't want to comment on others. I arrived in time because my flight wasn't cancelled.
Which midfielder do you feel more comfortable playing with?
I feel very comfortable with all of them. I got used to playing with partners on the midfield in Argentina.
You've been in the cover of every sports journal in Spain. They all hail you as Real Madrid's saviour.
There are no saviours. I'm here to help. I don't feel any pressure. It's a personal challenge for me to play in European football.
Who helps you deal with pressure?
My family, my girlfriend and my agent are always at my side supporting me. I still haven't had the chance of speaking to Capello.
Is training tougher here than in Argentina?
It's the same.
Have you spoken to Redondo?
We have agreed to meet for lunch and have wished each other a happy Christmas and New Year. I don't like people comparing me with him. We are different players. We have a similar understanding of football. I will try to do my job the best I possibly can.
Who do you think is better, Diarra, Guti or Emerson?
They're all good. I'm not here to decide who I should be paired with. That's the coach's job. I feel comfortable playing with all of them.
