Gonzalo Higuaín: "I'm here to earn a spot on the starting team and everyone's respect"
In his first four training sessions with Real Madrid, Gonzalo Higuaín has showcased his freshness and quality in the attacking front. This morning, he was paired with Ronaldo. After the session ended, he gave a press conference in which he said "the more rivalry there is for a spot on the starting eleven, the better."
How have your first few days of work been? Are you ready to play on Sunday?
I feel very well and very comfortable. I'm proud of being part of this great squad. I will do anything the coaching staff says. If they think I should play on Sunday against Deportivo I will do so, of course.
Have any of your teammates suprised you?
They're all good teammates, but I still need to get to know some of them better. I'm not too worried because we have a good enough team to win Leagues. Ronaldo is a master football player and I feel comfortable around him, as I do around everybody else. They have all surprised me. I'm starting a new stage in my career.
Has Capello told you what position he wants you to play in?
He's said nothing to me yet. I am currently playing like I did for River Plate and will do so until he tells me otherwise.
Did anyone warn you about his character?
I had heard something. I like his character. I think it's good he's like that. It's good to have a very demanding coach.
Cassano was left out during the practice match today. This, no doubt, benefits you.
I'm not going to comment on that so as to avoid any controversy. Capello must have had his reasons to leave him out. I feel I'm as good as everybody else, so the more forwards there are, the better. It doesn't matter to me if Cassano is on the team or not.
Has Capello spoken to you yet?
No. I'm currently on the first team, which is what I signed for. I'm here to earn a spot on the starting team and everyone's respect.
