Ramón Calderón reviews the Club's goings on and is counting on winning titles this year

On Monday night, Real Madrid President Ramón Calderón was a guest on Maracaná, a sports talk show on Spanish television channel Cuatro. Calderón discussed the team's efforts, renewing David Beckham's contract, getting Ronaldo back in top form, and several other topics. He also stood by his word that Real Madrid will bring lots of happiness to their fans this year.

ELECTION PROMISES
“I made many promises during the elections. The main priorities weren't signing Cesc y Kaká, but bringing in a coach like Capello, who signed on only 48 hours after the election was over. Many thought his contract with Juventus would be an issue, but it wasn't. I also promised not to get involved on the coach's work. Ninenty-nine percent of Madridistas, myself included, wanted someone like him to instil seriousness, discipline, and order. That's exactly what Capello brought, and the players are really happy with him.”

“The members are smarter than electing me as President because I talked about signing a player. That's all that is talked about, when in fact we have also lowered member dues, reimbursed their dues increase, given out 5,000 more season tickets, supported the fan clubs, and brought in Capello without interfering in the players he wants. That's what members voted for, and saying otherwise would be disrespecting them.”

THE ROLE OF PRESIDENT
“I want a model in which the President plays a minor role and only represents Real Madrid at specific times. I want to let everyone do their job. It was a platform of my candidacy and I want to maintain that stance while I am here.”

RONALDO
“Ronaldo is training with more heart and enthusiasm than ever. A player capable of recovering from an injury as bad as the one he suffered with Inter Milan has to have a lot of ambition.”

BECKHAM
“He's a genius both on and off the pitch, and an adorable person in ever sense of the word. Humanely, he is one of the most supportive, caring people I know. Capello trusts him implicitily. He started in a couple matches and now he's getting playing time. Everyone can't play at once. I know he and Mijatovic are talking about renewing his contract. I would love for it to happen because he is a great player, but I will never get involved in sporting decisions.”

RAÚL AND THE NATIONAL TEAM
“I maintain my position of not interfering with professionals' jobs, so I am not going to criticise Luis Aragonés' decision. That doesn't detract from me still thinking that Raúl is irreplaceable on the national team as well as Real Madrid. Over the last two matches, Raúl proved he's not done yet and that he's here to stay for a while longer. Capello told me the same thing when I spoke to him. I am sure Raúl will stay on the same track. His goal against Atletico Madrid on Sunday wasn't easy.”

CAPELLO'S STYLE
“Here at Real Madrid we are thrilled with Fabio Capello, and we will be even moreso in May or June when we're at La Cibeles. That's when we will see if Capello's style was the right call or not.”

WINTER TRANSFER WINDOW
“I'm not sure if we'll sign anyone. It depends on the coach. He decides everything. I do think it's a bit early. We have an extraordinary squad capable of winning titles.”

SUPPORTERS
“In the last six years, the Santiago Bernabéu has never been sanctioned for throwing objects onto the field or violence. There hasn't been any type of incident, meaning our fans are absolutely civilized in the Stadium. I am very proud of all Real Madrid supporters.”

REFEREES
“I did, do, and always will believe in the integrity of the referees. I think they make mistakes sometimes, as all human beings do, but it's a miracle that they make so few mistakes being that they have to make such quick decisions on the turf. It's a miracle that they make so many right calls in a matter of seconds when we can't even do it after seeing replays on television.”
