Beckham Talks Get Real Serious
Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon refuses to get involved with David Beckham's contract talks, despite the January transfer window looming ever larger.
The former Manchester United man's deal at the Bernabeu is set to expire in the summer.
While the former England captain has openly declared his desire to finish his career with the Primera Liga giants, negotiations remain ongoing.
Calderon clearly admires Beckham and wants him to stay in Spain, but insists he will leave the discussions to the club's money men.
"He is a genius and a wonderful person in every sense," Calderon told the club's website.
"From a human point of view, he is one of the most charitable and lovely people that I have ever met.
"I know that [Real sporting director Predrag] Mijatovic is in talks with him regarding his contract extension.
"I would love him to stay because he is a great player, but I will not interfere in the sporting side."
Jose Antonio Reyes' arrival at the club has forced Beckham into a bit-part role under new boss Fabio Capello so far this term, but Calderon insists the 31-year-old midfielder is still integral to Real's plans.
"Capello has confidence in him," Calderon added.
"He has been a starter in some games and now he is enjoying some minutes, but he cannot play in every game."
With the international break ahead, the ex-international skipper must wait until the away trip to Getafe on October 15 for his next chance for first team football.
